646. still not well - all I have is this nice article about Aaron Craft

When you're a college player and LeBron James praises you on Twitter, you're probably doing something right.  James praised Ohio State guard Aaron Craft on his defense during last night's Buckeyes win over Cincinnatti, calling Craft the best college defender in the country. The tweet:
If James had gone to college he would have gone to Ohio State, so there's undoubtedly some bias there. Still, Craft is an impressive defender. Celtics fans should be reminded of Avery Bradley when they watch Craft in that both players are great at beating their opponents -- most often a ball handler -- to a spot on the floor.
"The first time I saw him and I kept watching him and watching him, I felt probably the best thing he did was moved his feet and kept guys in front of him," Ohio State coach Thad Matta said Friday during a press conference at TD Garden. "I think from the standpoint of what makes a great defender, I think intelligence and desire, and he has both of those, and then obviously some God‑given abilities. But he takes great pride in what he's doing every single possession."
-- Wisconsin made 14 3-pointers against Syracuse on Thursday (another would have won the game), but the Buckeyes said they don't plan to employ the same strategy against the Orange.
"It's not our game plan just to get some threes," said Ohio State guard William Buford. "We want to move the ball against their defense. The threes certainly count, but we do want to move it and work it inside out."
Said guard DeShaun Thomas, "Yeah, our guards are trying attack in the middle and dump it down on the baseline. It's more than just shooting threes."

Post Number 111

618. Here is a map showing the location of the 16 remaining teams in the NCAA basketball tournament - the geographical center is just a little southwest of Cincinnati (there are two balloons in Cincinnati - one for Xavier and one for UC)
There’s a definite Midwestern feel to this year’s NCAA Sweet 16, and exactly half of the teams are located in Ohio or a neighboring state.  The good thing is that Archie Miller gets to recruit against all of these schools which are all a three or four hour drive max from the University of Dayton.
619. In 1962, Ohio was on top of the college basketball world, as the Bearcats beat the Jerry Lucas-John Havlicek Buckeyes for the second straight year. Dayton also won the NIT that year.
That was the last time an Ohio team won the NCAA Tournament
In the 49 years since then, 17 states and Washington, D.C., have seen teams win championships.
11 California           10 North Carolina                              5 Kentucky
3 Michigan              3 Indiana                                            3 Connecticut
2 Kansas                 2Florida
One title: Illinois, Texas, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Arkansas, Arizona, Maryland, New York, Washington, D.C.
Maybe Ohio is due.

620. A little GREEN DAY for your Tuesday - Wake me up When September Ends:
Some cool math:

11 x 11 = 121
111 x 111 = 12,321
1,111 x 1,111 = 1,234,321
11,111 x 11,111 = 123,454,321
111,111x 111,111 = 12,345,654,321
1,111,111 x 1,111,111 = 1,234,567,654,321
11,111,111 x 11,111,111 = 123,456,787,654,321
111,111,111 x 111,111,111 = 12,345,678,987,654,321

Who in the heck would drive 900 miles for Taco Bell???

614. Stat of the day # 1 - until this year, no state had ever had four teams in the Sweet 16.  Ohio, Xavier, Cincinnati, and Ohio State give Ohio 4 teams in the NCAA tournament Sweet 16 after all four teams won 2 games this past weekend.
615. That Ohio State vs. Cincinnati game is going to be a dandy on Thursday night up in Boston!!!!!
616. at least I don't have to watch that dumb commercial about Matt Cristiano driving 900 miles for Taco Bell for at least 4 more days
617. 87 years ago yesterday - March 18, 1925 - The worst tornado on record occurred on March 18, 1925. The storm moved from Missouri to Indiana at speeds up to 50 mph. The storm was a major F5 tornado and it obliterated everything in its path. The storm took the lives of 695 people, making it the single deadliest tornado ever.
618. stat of the day # 2 from Chicago - On Saturday, the Windy City set a new record for the most number of 80-degree days in March with four when the temperature warmed to 82 degrees during the afternoon at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport.
Saturday was also the fourth consecutive day above 80, which broke the previous record for earliest in the season to have four consecutive 80-degree days. Previously the earliest Chicago has ever had four consecutive 80-degree days was back on April 15-18, 1896.
Prior to this year, there had only been 10 days in March with highs in the 80s. Therefore on average, Chicago only has an 80-degree high during the month of March just once in about every 14 years.

Quite an Impressive Winning Streak is Halted

611. Huge congratulations to the Anna Lady Rockets for their very impressive 51 game winning streak.  It was halted yesterday in the Division III State Championship game, but they have nothing to be ashamed of.  Here is a picture from the game and the first few paragraphs of Sonny Fulks' excellent article about the game.
Anna fell in overtime for the Division III title with the worst of realizations.  A second title could have been…should have been… theirs!
Columbus - Notwithstanding the disappointment of the final score.
Nothwithstanding the fact of a heroic comeback in the last 45 seconds of overtime to force overtime.
Notwithstanding the fact that Anna Rockets’ bid for their 51st consecutive win and their second state title in as many years went by the boards…the Rockets left Value City Arena Saturday afternoon knowing that the outcome and disappointment was squarely on them.  It was, in proverbial terms, a title they could have won…should have won…the one that got away!
It’s all true, the Rockets falling to Columbus Africentric 70-66 in overtime for the 2013 Division III state title.
True, the issues that thwarted their winning a second consecutive title, right down to Ashley Frohne being out of the game with her fifth foul, leaving the Rockets forced to play the last two minutes of regulation and the overtime period with a patched lineup…particularly hard to swallow, after Frohne, for the second time in three days had been brilliant.  The 6’0″ senior scored 21 points and was unstoppable, including her defensive contribution…four clean blocks of Africentric shot attempts at the rim.

612. that is all for today - more NCAA basketball to watch and see how poorly I am doing on my brackets

Happy St. Patricks Day!!!!!!! - JC Tigers going to State!

609. A picture is worth a thousand words - Jackson Center Tigers Head Coach Scott Elchert high fives his assistants, Garrett Serr, Issac Klopfenstein, Bart Smith, and Brad Esser after the Tigers captured their third Boys Basketball Regional Championship at Trent Arena in Kettering last night with a very convincing 50-37 victory over the Jefferson Township Broncos in a game which was not near as close as the final score indicates.  The Tigers lead 19-6 at halftime and scored the first five points of the second half.  The lead reached 22 at 35-13 at one point in the third quarter.
The Tigers now face the Nubians of Columbus Africentric Early College School in one Division IV State Semi-final game on Thursday at 10:45 am at the Jerome F. Schottenstein Center on the campus of Ohio State University.  The Nubians defeated Beaver Eastern 78-43 last night.  The other semi-final game will match the Arlington Red Devils and the defending state champion Berlin Hiland Hawks.
610.  Here is a picture of one of my favorite Cincinnati Reds who still looks like he could replicate his 1987 when he went for 37 home runs, 50 stolen bases, and 100 RBIs

603. sorry that I did not post this yesterday, but this amazes me more than just about anything else that I know about animals --------        An Annual Event
Every year on March 15, buzzards return to Hinckley, Ohio In 1957 a reporter for Cleveland Press reported that the Cleveland Metroparks rangers had documented for at least 25 years that buzzards return to Hinckley each year on March 15. On that date in 1957, in response to the report, the town of Hinkley was surprised by over 9.000 skeptical spectators, reporters, bird watchers and naturalists who came to observe the arrival of the buzzards for themselves. The buzzards arrived on schedule as predicted, and have arrived on March 15 every year since then. The citizens and Chamber of Commerce declared the first Sunday on or after March 15 as Buzzard Sunday. Each year HinckleyTownship residents host Buzzard Day activities to mark the return of the buzzard to the Hinckley Reservation of Cleveland Metroparks.
At 7:00 am on March 15, Bob Hinkle, the chief of outdoor recreation for Cleveland Metroparks and the official buzzard spotter, records the arrival time of the first buzzard. Bird watching enthusiasts gather for the event, wearing Buzzard T-shirts, buttons and hats. The buzzards typically arrive between early morning and 3:00 pm.
604.  also this from yesterday about The Ides of March - In modern times, the term Ides of March is best known as the date on which Julius Caesar was killed in44 B.C. Caesar was stabbed (23 times) to death in the Roman Senate by a group of conspirators led by Marcus Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius Longinus. The group included 60 other co-conspirators according to Plutarch.

589. Everything you wanted to know about WTUE, but were afraid to ask:
WTUE (104.7 FM) is a classic rock formatted radio station with studios in Dayton, Ohio.  Its transmitter is located in Moraine, Ohio and can be heard clearly throughout Southwest Ohio.
Briefly known as WIFE-FM, WTUE's beginnings was that of WONE-FM simulcasting sister station WONE-AM which had a Top 40 format until 1967. WONE-FM played Top 40 hits without live personalities when WONE-AM switched to country in 1969. In 1971, the FCC granted permission to boost its power to 50,000 watts and monaural WONE-FM transformed to FM-stereo, and briefly quadraphonic, "the all new W-2". In 1974, WTUE was "The Super Ten Four!" with morning personality Al Morgan. Morgan eventually moved to KHJ in Los Angeles. The station was playing Top 40 hits with live DJs until 1976 when it switched to the new and innovative album oriented rock format under the direction of Program Director Chuck Browning and using the branding "T-105", competing with University of Dayton owned WVUD-FM. WTUE dropped "T-105" in 1979 and in the 1980s it ultimately won out in the ratings battle.  Mike McConnell formerly of WLW-AM Cincinnati and currently of WGN-AM, Chicago, also served as WTUE's Program Director in the early 80's following Chuck Browning.
Sports personality and University of Dayton graduate Dan Patrickwas half of the morning team on WTUE in the late-1970s/early-1980s under his given name, Dan Pugh. Dan was partnered as morning host with several other DJ's over the years including Shaun Scott, Dave Luczak, Major Dick Hale and Jeff Curry. WTUE was awarded Billboard Magazine's coveted "Station Of The Year" in the album-oriented rock format for medium-sized markets in 1983 under Program Director Bill Pugh (Dan Pugh's brother) and again in 1985 under Tom Carroll who served as Program Director from 1984-1997.

DON'T FORGET TO MOVE YOUR CLOCKS AHEAD TONIGHT!!!
570. my second favorite Disney movie - I believe the first Disney movie that I ever watched, Derek was about 1 1/2 and Missy was leaving for card club - we only had one television and she told me to keep this on and he should be ready for bed when it was over.  This was before Al Gore had invented the internet, therefore, I grudgingly sat and watched what I thought was going to be a "dumb" Disney movie that only kids 8 and below would enjoy.  Low and behold, I was sold in about the first five minutes, Cruella De Ville was mean and I was intrigued to find out how the movie was going to end - this happened about 19 years ago and I remember it like it was yesterday.

564. Everything you wanted to know about a 100 dollar bill, but were afraid to ask
The United States one hundred-dollar bill ($100) is a denomination of United States Currency.  U.S. statesman, inventor and diplomat Benjamin Franklin is currently featured on the obverse of the bill. On the reverse of the banknote is an image of Independence Hall. The time on the clock according to the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing, shows approximately 4:10. If the time is converted to a date (April 10), it is possible that the time was chosen because April 10 is the 100th day of a non-leap year (The numeral 4 on the clock face is "IV", while the real Independence Hall has "IIII".  The bill is one of two denominations that does not feature a President of the United States the other is the $ 10 bill, featuring Alexander Hamilton The $100 bill is the largest denomination that has been printed after July 13, 1969, when the denominations of $500, $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000 were retired. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing says the average life of a $100 bill in circulation is 89 months (7 years) before it is replaced due to wear and tear.
The bills are also commonly referred to as "Benjamins", in reference to the use of Benjamin Franklin's portrait on the denomination, or "C-Notes", based on the Roman Numeralfor 100.
Approximately 29% of all notes produced in 2009 were $100 bills. One hundred hundred-dollar bills are delivered by Federal Reserve Banks in mustard-colored straps ($10,000).
